אוכל ישראלי - JEWISH ASHKENAZI CARROTS TSIMMES - Israeli food


 Tsimmes and Gefilte- fish have always connected me to Judaism and tradition, that was not kept in my secular parents home.  Somehow I also found myself attracted also to Jewish soul music, what led me to the Klezmer Festival in Safed

INGREDIENTS  AND  PREPARATIONS :

Steam in slightly a casserole :
     -    40 grms of butter (for taste) / 3 tablespoon canola oil (for kashrut)
     -    A bag of frozen baby carrots / 20 young carrots, peeled and diced bite size

Add to the pot :  
     -    1 cup of water   
     -    1 whole medium onion 
     -    4 tbsp raisins (can be mixed with dried prunes and apricots) 
     -    2 cm coarsely grated ginger root

Add the remaining ingredients and cook for a few minutes :
     -    1 tbs of honey
     -    2-3 tbs of brown sugar
     -    1 tsp of Cinnamon powder
     -    1 tsp chicken soup powder
     -    Ground black pepper
     -    Lemon juice
     -    grated lemon zest
     -    Salt (probably not necessary)


Remove the onion and fix flavors

SERVING :

On Shabbat meals, Passover and Rosh Hashanah - as a side dish near a
beef stew
